Mostly aluminum and copper are used in making heat sinks, even though copper has some advantages over aluminum it's costlier and it's denser than aluminum, so aluminum is widely used in most applications.

Choosing of Alloy
There are two types of aluminum alloys used in the manufacturing of heat sinks, they are 6061 and 6063. 6063 is widely used due to its high thermal conductivity.
Heat Sinks - a brief note
Heat sinks are used to dissipate heat energy from semiconductor devices and optoelectronic devices such as LED lightings. Generally heat sinks can be divided into two types - Active and Passive. They are further classified into different types such extruded, bonded, skived, stamped, forged, and CNC-based.
While bonded heat sinks are high cost they give improved thermal performance and moderate performance - usually these are considered for applications that requires large amount of heat sinks.
Stamped heat sinks are used for low power applications and they are are very low cost at the same time it gives low performance. Skived heat sinks are made from copper-there is room for design flexibility and high fin-density. But the drawbacks of Skived heat sinks is their high weight and directional sensitivity.
Forged heat sinks are either made from either aluminium or copper. They are hot or cold forged. They give moderate performance but have very limited design flexibility.
CNC machined heat sinks possess high thermal conductivity and variety of designs also possible but the negative factor with CNC based are their cost and the production time is also high
