Mostly aluminum and copper are used in making heat sinks, even though copper has some advantages over aluminum it's costlier and it's denser than aluminum, so aluminum is widely used in most applications.

Extrusion heat sink

Of all the types available extrusion heat sinks are more efficient because they dissipate more heat energy than others. Extruded aluminium heat sinks are cost effective and custom specifications can be easily manufactured. Heat sinks from aluminium allows for significant weight savings over copper.

Design Flexibility

Custom-made aluminum extrusion provides flexibility in designing LED lightings. Since LED lightings are demanding in nature and is mostly used in highly critical atmospheres fixtures also need some kind of attention. In this scenario, aluminum extruded sinks play a very vital role. Extruded aluminum fixtures play a dual role they act as heat dissipating agent and also as a reflector.

Why extrusion heat sinks

Extrusion heat sinks are the preferred choice in LED lighting. These extrusion heat sinks have more advantages in street lights, high bay lights, floodlights, and other outdoor lights as well as in indoor lights too. For an effective performance of LED perfect temperature has to be maintained. Only a perfectly designed extruded heat sink can deliver the performance.

LED extrusions can be mounted either indoor or outdoor as they are compact enough they can be fit into any kind of space. Be it recessed downlight, street light, high bay light, floodlight, and strip light each carries the advantage of aluminum extrusion to enhance its architectural value.

LED lightings can be installed anywhere be it home or office, it can be used in various spots such as office work stations, kitchen cabinets, railings, staircase, as a decorative lamp in gardens, etc.

The versatility of extruded heat sink and the design flexibility it brings are vast.

So these aluminum extrusion plays a significant role in the life span of LED devices, it gives the designer flexibility of designing to suit rigid atmosphere and conditions. This aluminum extrusion plays an important role in the thermal management of LED lightings.

Applications of extruded heat sink
Need of heat sinks

LED lights which are a better replacement for old halogen or CFL lamps also emit heat radiations thereby the lifetime of LED is affected, in order to address this issue heat sinks are provided with LED, these heat sinks dissipate the heat energy which is produced by the LED.

We at Aaron Lights choose right kind of heat sink thus ensuring life time value of all our LED Solutions at the same time we also ensure that it perfectly fits the ambiance and enhances the architectural aspect.

Choosing of Alloy

There are two types of aluminum alloys used in the manufacturing of heat sinks, they are 6061 and 6063. 6063 is widely used due to its high thermal conductivity.

Heat Sinks - a brief note

Heat sinks are used to dissipate heat energy from semiconductor devices and optoelectronic devices such as LED lightings. Generally heat sinks can be divided into two types - Active and Passive. They are further classified into different types such extruded, bonded, skived, stamped, forged, and CNC-based.

While bonded heat sinks are high cost they give improved thermal performance and moderate performance - usually these are considered for applications that requires large amount of heat sinks.

Stamped heat sinks are used for low power applications and they are are very low cost at the same time it gives low performance. Skived heat sinks are made from copper-there is room for design flexibility and high fin-density. But the drawbacks of Skived heat sinks is their high weight and directional sensitivity.

Forged heat sinks are either made from either aluminium or copper. They are hot or cold forged. They give moderate performance but have very limited design flexibility.

CNC machined heat sinks possess high thermal conductivity and variety of designs also possible but the negative factor with CNC based are their cost and the production time is also high
